Walter Crane

Walter Crane was a prominent 19th century illustrator, designer, and painter, and one of the leading artists of the Arts & Crafts Movement and of the Aesthetic Movement. He was born in 1845 and spent most of his childhood in Torquay, Devon. Shortly before the death of his father, portrait painter Thomas Crane, Crane was apprenticed to W.J. Linton, a wood engraver. Once his apprenticeship ended, Crane supported his mother and siblings and his career as a painter with supplemental work illustrating children’s books. Although he always thought of himself as a painter, it is as an illustrator of children’s books and a designer that Crane is primarily remembered.
