With the Night Mail represents Kipling’s foray into science fiction. This edition is beautifully and fancifully illustrated by Frank X. Leyendecker and Henry Reuterdahl, both of whom were leading artists of the time. The novella was originally serialized in McClure’s Magazine. Set in 2000 A.D., airships, otherwise known as dirigibles, rule the skies. In his tale, Kipling has imagined an entire aviation industry only a scant six years after the first successful flights at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
