One afternoon in 1862, mathematics professor Charles Lutwidge Dodgson took a break from his duties as an Oxford don to tell a fantastic story to the three Liddell sisters, daughters of a fellow Oxford professor, while they were on a short rowing excursion. This story eventually became Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, published under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. The original manuscript given to Alice Liddell was illustrated by Carroll himself, but the published book version was illustrated by John Tenniel. The sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is Through the Looking Glass, which is also on exhibit.

An earlier version of this text has been digitized and is available through the Internet Archive.
