Thomas Hughes was a prominent socialist reformer during his lifetime, but it is as the author of the Tom Brown stories that he is best remembered. These stories draw upon Hughes time as a student at Rugby. The educational system practiced at Rugby, which emphasized the physical and moral development of boys, became the established public school model, and heavily influenced education in the late Victorian era.
