Federal Writers Series

The Federal Writers’ Project was a United States federal government project to fund written work and support writers during the Great Depression as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), a New Deal program.  As one of a group of New Deal arts programs it was known as Federal Project Number One.  Most well-known of the  publications were the 48 state guides to America known as the American Guide Series.

The books were written and compiled by the Federal Writers’ Project but printed by the individual states containing detailed histories of each state, description of every city and town, along with state’s culture and automobile tours to the important attractions and portfolios of photographs.
