Wilkie Collins was best known for his ‘sensation novels’, a genre of fiction characterized by outlandish plots and scandalous characters. Mr. Wray’s Cash-Box, Or, The Mask and the Mystery: A Christmas Sketch is not a sensation novel, but is instead Collins’s only attempt at a Christmas story, albeit a Christmas crime story. The story centers around the theft and destruction of a mask of William Shakespeare made by Mr. Wray.
