Mark Twain

Samuel Langhorne Clemens, more familiarly known as Mark Twain, is one of the most beloved novelists in American literature. When Twain was twelve, his father died, forcing Twain to stop school and start working to support his family. Writer, printer, riverboat pilot, and journalist are just a few of the jobs to which Twain turned his hand. Twain’s success had a lot to do with how he captured that moment in U.S. history of westward expansion during which a young country came of age. Although remembered primarily for his humorous works, Twain’s later works are far more serious, with his trademark humor being used satirically for social commentary.
