Jacob (1785 - 1863) and Wilhelm (1786 - 1859) Grimm were German linguists. Plunged into poverty upon the death of their father, the Grimm brothers supported themselves and their family by working as librarians and linguistics professors. It was during their first jobs as librarians that the Grimm brothers collected most of the folktales collected into Household Stories. The Grimm brothers saw the collection of folktales as a nationalistic activity that could unify the many Germanic principalities into one German state. The brothers continuously expanded the collection of folktales throughout their lives, editing out some of the more violent and sexual elements to make the stories suitable to a juvenile audience.
