Henry Collins Brown, the editor of this New Series No. 2 edition, was founder of the Museum of the City of New York.  The original Valentine’s Manual of the city of New York began in 1841 by David T. Valentine who was a clerk of Common Council and the first to preserve the records of the City of New York.  Brown was inspired to continue the Valentine Manual style but changed the format to include historical facts, reproductions of old maps and colored prints of New York instead of the original financial city records.  Brown’s manual rather is a social history of New York beautifully illustrated in the style of day. Digital copies of Brown’s Valentine’s Manual of the city of New York are available online through Columbia University’s Digital Collections.

A digitized vesion of this text is available through the Internet Archive.
