The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County was Twain’s first book. It is a collection of humorous sketches of life in the American frontier. The popularity of the book started Twain on his career as a writer of fiction for it was on the strength of this book that Twain was signed to a contract with the American Publishing Company of Hartford, Connecticut.
