This guidebook focuses on the history of Philadelphia and the attractions available to visitors to the city. Published only four years after the formation of the first “major league,” the National Association, this work groups “base ball” with sports like sailing, cricket, skating, shooting, and trotting. Baseball was played in Philadelphia by two teams, the Athletics and the Philadelphia, at the Athletic Club at 25th St. and Jefferson St., which is currently the site of Athletic Square Park. The Athletics ball club referenced in this guidebook ceased to exist in 1876 after playing in the inaugural year of the National League. Another team of the same name also famously played in Philadelphia from 1901 to 1954 before moving to Kansas City and then Oakland, where they currently play.
