-The Negro Leagues Book

Compiled by the Negro Leagues Committee of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), this work presents a history of the teams and players of the Negro Leagues. As an historical resource, this book provides a comprehensive listing of the Negro League team rosters from their beginning in 1863 to their dissolution in 1955. Ambitiously, this work seeks to authoritatively identify every Negro League player, their nicknames, and the teams on which they played, a process which Robert Peterson began in his 1970 work Only the Ball was White. Like other SABR publications on display in this exhibit, this work relies heavily on statistical data to measure, record, and compare athletic performance.
