-New York Panorama
Created as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal era Federal Writers' Project, this work was designed to highlight the history and ongoing success of “The World’s GREATEST Metropolis,” New York City. As a product of the Works Progress Administration, this guidebook employed “hundreds of research workers” who spent months compiling, fact checking, and updating information about New York. This guide comprehensively covers baseball in the chapter “Athletics by Proxy,” which states “among watched games, of course, baseball comes first. And in baseball New York comes first.” (316) This section also includes information on the “National Negro Baseball League,” which was represented in New York by the Black Yankees. Baseball was also mentioned in the chapter “Portrait of Harlem,” with “huge Negro attendance at baseball games in Yankee Stadium and at the Polo Grounds.” (147)
