This adaptation of Eliot Asinof’s book, Eight Men Out, was inspired by the Black Sox Scandal in which the Chicago White Sox threw the 1919 World Series. The stinginess of Charles Cominsky and his failure to pay promised bonuses to his players is given as the main reason that gamblers were able to bribe the players involved to throw the game. The film questions the involvement of Bucky Weaver and “Shoeless” Joe Jackson in the fix, although it admits that they knew what was happening. Eight Men Out is one of the first in a series of films to interrogate the Black Sox Scandal.
