Ralph Henry Barbour wrote very popular sports-themed stories intended for boys. During the late 19th to early 20th centuries, there was a strong pedagogical mission for children's literature that aimed to prepare children for the roles that they would play in society. Since gender roles were more rigidly defined then, it was common for children’s literature to be written for a specific, gendered audience.  Barbour wrote over 135 novels and many short stories that appeared in the popular children’s periodicals of the day. Barbour’s stories stressed fair play, humility, teamwork, and the importance of helping the less fortunate.
