The Birds of Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey, with Introductory Chapters on Geographical Distribution and Migration. Philadelphia: Delaware Valley Ornithological Club, 1894.

Witmer Stone was president of the American Ornithologists' Union (AOU) from 1920–23, and was editor of the AOU's periodical The Auk from 1912–1936. He is considered to be one of the "last naturalists" but he was remembered primarily as a "great ornithologist". Stone worked nearly fifty years at The Academy of Natural Sciences and wrote extensively on birds and plants, as well as mammals. He published hundreds of articles on ornithology; approximately 125 of which appeared in The Auk, the Journal of the American Ornithological Society.
