Known primarily as a botanist and zoologist, Nuttall traveled America seeking specimens for Europeans and American collections from 1808-1841. He worked for the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia and for Harvard's botanical gardens, among others. Nuttall provided Audubon with specimens of birds from the Western region of America.

Nuttall published his Manual of the Ornithology of the United States and of Canada in 1832.
