John Gould (1804-1881).

Birds of Asia. London: Printed by Taylor and Francis, Pub. by the Author, 1850-1883.

Gould was a member of the generation following Audubon.

Scottish by birth, he described not only the birds of Great Britain, but also those of Asia and Australia, thereby complementing Audubon's Birds of America.

Gould perfected the use of folio plates illustrating the male and female of a species against a pale background without significant botanical or other natural features, while the foreground of each shows the natural habitat, including food source of the birds.

After issuing his Birds of Australia, Gould published the present work, Birds of Asia, although it was left unfinished when he died.
