Chester A. Arthur (1829-1886). [Letter] 1883 September 7, Washington (D.C.) [to] John Hoey, Long Branch (N.J.).

Arthur thanks Hoey for his telegram in regards to Hugh, and expresses that he is “glad to know from your message & the papers, that he is not so seriously injured as was feared.” He sends his warm regards and wishes for a steady recovery, closing by thanking Hoey for his kind invitation which he will accept if he is able. The letter was written during Arthur's term as the 21st President of the United States; he served as Garfield's Vice President and assumed the presidency himself upon Garfield's death in September 1881, serving until March 1885.
