William McKinley (1843-1901). [Letter] [to] James Abraham, Esq., Smithfield, Pa.

McKinley states that he received Abraham’s favor and will deliver the papers as requested to President Hayes. Hayes served as the nineteenth President of the United States (1877-1881); before this, he was Governor of Ohio from 1868 to 1872 and from 1876 to 1877, and had been a major general in the Civil War and had served in Congress. Before becoming the 25th President of the United States (1897-01), McKinley served as a Representative from Ohio (1877-83, 1883-84, 1885-91) and as Governor of Ohio (1891-96). He did not finish his term in office; he was assassinated by an anarchist in Buffalo, New York in 1901.
