James Buchanan
Buchanan states that his “old and valued friend” David Lynch, a New Yorker by birth who has resided in Pennsylvania, desires to make the recipient's acquaintance (see other letters of introduction in the collection). Before becoming the fifteenth President of the United States (1857-61), Buchanan served in the War of 1812, as a Representative (1821-31) and a Senator (1834-45) from Pennsylvania, as Minister to Russia (1832-34) and Britain (1853-56), and as Polk's Secretary of State (1845-49).
