Archibald Johnston (1865-1948). Letterbook of Bethlehem Steel Company. Ciphered sample from Archibald Johnston letterbook.

This “letterbook” contains mainly confidential and “top secret”, ciphered correspondence between Archibald Johnston (Lehigh 1889), a president of Bethlehem Steel Company and the other executives of the company about weaponry and war ship sales to the countries who would soon become the players of the international conflicts. With the upcoming “Great War” in mind, researchers can clearly see how business was carried out “behind closed doors” and how secret information was secured. It is a rich resource to study the history of communication and material culture, international relations, and business and trade, as well as cryptology.
