-Papashvily Letters

George Papashvily was born in Kobiantkari, Georgia in 1898 and immigrated to the United States in 1922. George met Helen in California in 1931, and they moved to Pennsylvania in 1935. George became known for his stone sculptures, mainly of small animals, and a book about his immigrant experiences, written by him and his wife, titled Anything Can Happen. These letters were sent following a school visit that George and Helen made. Based on the students’ letters, the Papashvilys spoke about their early lives, the books they had written, George’s artwork, and what it was like being an immigrant from Georgia. These letters are worth keeping because they show how regionally prominent artists interacted with the community and how young children understood topics like immigration and art.
