An artifact from the first of three U.S. presidential impeachments, this admission ticket provides a tangible record of American political and constitutional history. Vice-president to Abraham Lincoln, Johnson inherited the presidency in 1865 following Lincoln’s assassination. While the impeachment was ostensibly about Johnson’s dismissal of Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, it was the culmination of numerous political disputes related to southern Reconstruction. Johnson was ultimately acquitted by the Senate and not removed from office, but his impeachment and subsequent trial mark a watershed moment in U.S. politics that set a precedent for the impeachment of Presidents Bill Clinton and Donald Trump.
