The 4th edition actually brings together four separately paginated books: Leaves of Grass, Drum-Taps, Sequel to Drum-Taps and Songs Before Parting. Author's and printers' names appear on the title page verso. Usually referred as the "workshop edition", it exhibits Whitman's sentimental and political, social and personal states for a fresh start in the postwar America.

One of the dominant themes of Whitman is "one's self"; as shown here, the first page of the poems is titled Walt Whitman, and the first line is "I celebrate myself!"
