Brooklyn, New York, 1856.

Whitman put a lot of effort into promoting his work – in some instances he wrote anonymous book reviews on Leaves of Grass; he was impressed with it. He sent a copy of the book to Ralph Waldo Emerson. When he received a letter from Emerson, he proudly stamped Emerson's words to this edition's spine: "I Greet You at the Beginning of A Great Career R W Emerson."
