As a University trustee, John Fritz worked to provide leadership and vision to make the university a sound institution of higher learning. In 1909, he informed President Henry Drinker that he would design, fund and supervise the erection of a modern engineering laboratory and install the best and largest equipment available for teaching and testing. Fritz based his design on the shop buildings that he had designed and erected at nearby Bethlehem Iron Company. The University's Board of Trustees would name this building the Fritz Engineering Laboratory.
