Prof. Roger Slutter preparing the machine for a test.

Professor Eney specified that the then world's largest universal testing machine be built – the five million pound Baldwin Universal Test Machine. The specifications required that the tension and compression capabilities be able to produce a wide range of force from only sufficient compression to crack an egg (20 to 40 lbs) up to five million pounds in both tension and compression.
