Lancaster-born Miles Rock fought in the Civil War as part of the Pennsylvania Volunteers. When the conflict ended, Rock enrolled at Lehigh, where he majored in civil engineering. He is Lehigh’s only graduate who was also a Civil War veteran. After Lehigh, Rock worked for the United States Government as an astronomer. In 1883, he became an astronomical engineer for the Government of Guatemala. Rock also served as the Chief of the Guatemala Boundary Commission, where he helped mediate border disputes between Mexico and Guatemala.
