Whitman worked as a printer and a journalist before becoming a poet, and as such he understood the power of advertising. In connection with the third edition of Leaves of Grass in 1860, Whitman released a short pamphlet titled Leaves of Grass Imprints that collected 25 reviews of the 1855 and 1856 editions of Leaves of Grass. Whitman was no stranger to self-promotion, as he had anonymously written three reviews of the first edition of Leaves of Grass five years earlier. Only two of the reviews were positive, however, suggesting that Whitman believed that any publicity was good publicity. He included all three reviews in Leaves of Grass Imprints.
