Since 2004, a team of scholars, librarians, students, and technology specialists at Lehigh University has been working to recover what happened during the years Whitman spent at Pfaff’s—from about 1858 to 1862—with a digital humanities project called The Vault at Pfaff’s: An Archive of Art and Literature by the Bohemians of Antebellum New York (lehigh.edu/pfaffs). The title of the project comes from the first line of an unpublished poem that Whitman wrote in his notebook in the early 1860s about "The vault at Pfaffs where the drinkers and laughers meet to eat and drink and carouse.”
