Mining Trip Photographs. Lehigh University, Department of Mining. 1922

In the first half of the 20th century, Lehigh University’s engineering programs offered field trips as part of the curriculum. These trips were popular among students as an opportunity for practical application of the theory learned in the classroom. Civil Engineers spent summer weeks in the “surveying camps”, Mechanical Engineers took “shop visit” trips to local industrial facilities. In the summer of 1922, the Mining Engineering program offered a “mining inspection” summer trip to the gold, silver, cobalt, copper and nickel mines in southern Ontario, Canada via New York and Niagara Falls. Thirty-six students participated in the trip and five faculty accompanied them. During this trip the students and faculty built camps near the mines, visited cities, enjoyed natural beauty and combined “business with pleasure”. After returning to South Mountain, the students prepared and submitted reports based on their observations and data they collected.

The photographs displayed here show the group leaving from the campus and coming back through the mining region of Michigan.
