The lobby and circulation desk are the center of Linderman Library. The circulation desk is constructed of the same granite as the room's walls, which was recycled from the original east staircase. Immediately behind the circulation desk is the Louis & Jane Weinstock 1936 Reading Room.

Across from the circulation desk is the floor-to-ceiling glass wall that provides an uninterrupted view of the original rotunda, now known as The Kenneth R. Woodstock 1965 Rotunda. Prior to the 2007 renovation, the rotunda was separated by a granite wall, with only a small wooden door providing access.

Between the desk and rotunda is a frosted glass floor, modeled after 19th century libraries. This feature is designed to help natural light reach further into the building.

Immediately across from the lobby's entrance is an exhibit case displaying a first edition copy of John James Audubon's Birds of America. A double elephant folio weighing around 70 pounds, this massive book contains hand-colored illustrations of the birds that Audubon observed in his travels around America. The birds pictured are all life-sized. The page of the book is turned once a semester and often matches the theme of the current library exhibit.

A glass staircase to the right of the Audubon case will bring you to the ground floor
