First Edition. First Printing. An unsympathetic view of a strike in a New England shoe factory. Reportedly “based on the author's first-hand observation of strikes,” though Blake notes that the strikers “speak in a jargon straight out of the author's own head and are all stupid, lazy, malicious, coarse, brutal, greedy and spiteful,” and that the novel's violent scenes are described “in loving and sickening detail” (Blake p.261). HANNA 1917.
