First Edition. The author's first book, billed as “a romantic novel of steel and sex and war.” Set in the real-life steel town of Middletown, Ohio, where the book (according to one long-time resident) caused a brief furor, as most of the characters were thinly-veiled representations of prominent Middletown residents. With superb wraparound dustjacket art, featuring an etching of an industrial scene by Di Gemma.

Rufus Colfax Phillips, (1898-1963).
