20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Burbank, Calif.: Walt Disney Home Video, 1980.

Starring Kirk Douglas, James Mason, and Peter Lorre and produced by Walt Disney Home Video, this is the videocassette release of the original 1954 motion picture.

This film was based on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne, in which Captain Nemo guides the submarine Nautilus on a memorable voyage below the seven seas. This prophetic work from Jules Verne was written in an age before undersea exploration, anticipating nuclear submarines freely diving into ocean’s depths, like the Bathysphere and the Deepsea Challenger. Verne took the name “Nautilus” for his fictional submarine from Robert Fulton’s 1800 submarine. Fulton later built the first successful steamboat.

In this story, one may consider the Nautilus to be laboratory apparatus, and the sea a laboratory ripe for exploration.
