The original stone physics building was built in 1892, the Sherman Fairchild Laboratory for Solid-State Studies was built in 1976, and an addition completed in 1986 houses the Center. The Center was built with help from the Sherman Fairchild Foundation. It houses classrooms and laboratories for undergraduate and graduate students in physics. The Center also includes the Lewis Laboratory named for former Lehigh president, W. Deming Lewis.
