Estée Lauder (1906-2004): Cosmetics Business

American business woman, who as a young woman worked for her uncle, Dr. John Schotz, a chemist, selling his face creams and other beauty products. She was co-founder with her husband, Joseph Lauder, of the Estée Lauder Companies in 1946. In 1968 she created the Clinique Laboratories, a dermatologist-guided entity introducing the concept of a serum into beauty products. She became the first woman’s cosmetics company to introduce a second line for men. Among the 27 brands owned by the Estée Lauder companies is also the Max Factor line. In 1998, she was Time magazine’s only woman on their list of 20 of the most influential business geniuses of the 20th century. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for business in 2004.
