Isaac Merritt Singer (1811-1875): The Sewing Machine

Singer was founder of the first American multinational company. In 1850 he invented the first practical, commercially successful sewing machine by recognizing the key elements in the design of sewing machines. His invention was the pressure foot that controlled the feed of fabric. The armature apparatus to which the pressure foot was attached caused less thread breakage. The Singer sewing machine was easy to use, reasonably inexpensive and did away with hand sewing.
