Jumanji, a jungle adventure board game that “two bored and restless children” play one afternoon, is the gateway to an unseen world from which animals and strange creatures emerge into the children’s living room with each roll of the dice. While the jungle remains hidden in this Caldecott award-winning work of juvenile fiction, it is central to the three feature-length films it inspired. The board game serves as a portal to other realms, in the first film (1995) enabling the return of a now-grown child who was trapped in Jumanji for 28 years. In the second film (2017), the game has evolved into a video game that transports four teenagers “Back to the Jungle” as revealed by the subtitle, where they assume avatars. In the final film (2019), Jumanji: The Next Level, travelers enter Jumanji and traverse varied terrain including desert, a river, and mountains through the course of their adventures.
