A German polymath belonging to the Jesuit Order, Kircher published extensively on topics ranging from Egyptian hieroglyphs to mechanical technology. On display is a book that Kircher wrote concerning geology and geography that contains highly detailed illustrations of the Earth. Of particular interest is the section of the book dedicated to Plato’s island of Atlantis, which Kircher believed to be a real place once located in the Atlantic Ocean between North America and Europe and Africa.
