A pirate adventure story based on the quest for buried treasure, Treasure Island became a popular children’s book that fueled interest in pirate stories in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Stevenson imagines his Treasure Island, home of the fictional Captain Flint’s buried treasure being located off the coast of Mexico. Told from the perspective of the young Jim Hawkins, the story follows the crew of the pirate Long John Silver, whose one leg and parrot came to signify pirates in popular culture. This work has been adapted across media formats, and N. C. Wyeth’s illustrations have become iconic representations of pirates.
