While Conan Doyle is best known for his Sherlock Holmes detective, he also wrote popular books based on the adventures of Professor Challenger, with this being the first in the series. The Lost World imagined by the author, also known as Maple White Land, is a volcanic plateau located in the Amazon forests of Brazil. The remoteness and isolation of this area has allowed prehistoric creatures to survive. Professor Challenger and his expedition encounter ape-men, dinosaurs, and bring a pterodactyl back to England with them. While not as influential as Sherlock Holmes, the legacy of The Lost World can be seen in works like Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park sequel of the same name and the television series Land of the Lost.
