In 1944, Professor Bruce G. Johnston, MS'34, recognizing the need for standardized building codes for columns, founded at Lehigh, the Column Research Council which later changed its name to Structural Stability Research Council. The post-WWII research at Fritz Engineering Laboratory established the parameters for structural members to be used in subsequent United States building codes.
