In 1824, The Rensselaer School was established in Troy, New York, by Stephen Van Rensselaer to teach specifically the practical applications of science, or engineering. It is credited with being the first school of civil engineering in America. In 1833 the school was renamed the Rensselaer Institute, and in 1861 its name was changed again to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
