An Elementary Course of Civil Engineering: For the Use of Cadets of the United States' Military Academy. 4th ed., mostly rewritten, and augmented with many additional subjects and plates. New York: John Wiley, 1849.

In 1802, the United States Military Academy at West Point was founded in effort to provide much-needed engineering education to new generations of Americans seeking to expand the built environment of the new world. Although the institution did not grant degrees until 1913, significant coursework in engineering was provided for over a century prior to this formal recognition. The present text details the instruction methodology in effect in the middle of the nineteenth century, just prior to Lehigh's founding, covering building materials, masonry, framing, bridges, roads, railways, canals, rivers, and sea coast improvements.
