Felker graduated from the State Agricultural College of Michigan with a B.S. in 1871. While pursuing his master’s degree, Felker worked as the Foreman of the school’s garden. Following his graduation, he worked as a grocer and editor in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This combination of educational and practical experience made him particularly well suited to write this dictionary of grocery products. Felker intended this work to be used for the education of common people about what it is they are buying at grocery stores.
