Map of Bethlehem, 1855.

William Theodore RoepperMap of Bethlehem and the New Town of Wetherill, Northampton County, Pa. Philadelphia: P. S. Duval & Co., 1855.

This lithographic map of Bethlehem includes Upper Island, also known as Calypso Island, visible on the far left in the Lehigh River. The island, once a resort, no longer exists. It was effectively removed ca. 1908 when the south channel of the Lehigh River was filled in and converted into a railroad yard. The images around the map's borders of the Zinc Works, Hydropathic Institute (where St. Luke's Hospital now stands), and Bethlehem's first house emphasize the patterns of development and industrial history that have shaped the city.

Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Schick, Class of 1937.
