Alexander Selkirk, sailor, traveled the South Seas and beyond in the company of famed explorer William Dampier and others. While on an expedition, Selkirk was stranded on the Juan Fernandez Islands, which is on the map shown here. He lived there alone for four years; his experience was a source for one of the most famous English novels, Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. Today, the islands are part of Chile's Valparaiso region, and the major island of the group is named Robinson Crusoe.
