On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or, The Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1860.

First American edition, with the bookplate of poet William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878). Darwin had sent copies of the first London edition to colleagues Asa Grey and Louis Agassiz at Harvard University. In an attempt to prevent pirated copies from entering the market, Gray negotiated an agreement with Appleton.
